Let Us Eat Cake and Celebrate……Get To Know Maggie!

It’s almost time to start celebrating our official 7th  year as All Dolled Up Photography and I figured before we start throwing up confetti that I would answer some questions I get a lot from clients and that are also some of the top questions that photographers receive in general….

Q1. What kind of gear do you use?

  • Camera body – Canon markiv (regular); backups: markiii (2 bodies)
  • Lens – 24m, 35m, 50m, 85, 100 macro, 135, and a 75-300 (I prefer primes clearly)
  • Tripod – I own one and Ive used it maybe four times in seven years
  • Filters – none
  • Flash – external Canon flashes/speedlights (4); Alien Bees (2)
  • Camera bag – I use a Kate Spade large waterproof bag with individual compartments for my gear

Q2. Which is your favorite lens? Why? My 85 is my baby. Tact sharp, great creamy bokeh. Gah, it’s love people. (my 135 is slowly starting to be used more and more though)

Q3. When you go in one of your travels, what all you take with you? Why? a backup body (incase of damage), my 35 and 85. 35 is great for all wide shots and my 85 for portraits

Q4. Among the gadgets that you own, is there something that you wish you hadn’t bought? Why? No regrets but I wish I didn’t buy my 24, I prefer my 35, but I still use it occasionally for some great beach shots

Q5. In the field, what are your settings? settings change with location, time of day, indoor/outdoor, clients, kids, everything. No two shoots are the same

  • White Balance – I overexpose personally, esp. with beach photography, it helps me edit later and nail my pop of color I love
  • Focus – Manual/Auto: manual settings, auto (lens), unless I’m using my macro lens for ring shots, etc.
  • Image Format – RAW/JPEG. Always RAW

Q6. What kind of tools do you use for post processing? software; Photomechanic, Lightroom and Photoshop

Q7. How do you educate yourself to take better pictures? tutorials, workshops, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and to not follow trends or other photographers’ work

Q8. Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why? Any photos taken in Disney and ones where I style/dress kids 100%. It’s something that people can’t say that aren’t original because they are my ideas

Q9. Whose work has influenced you most? I am influenced by fashion photographers and anyone who’s photo makes me stop scrolling

Q10. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? not to stress about not getting clients right away
