Just A Boy + His Droid

When I posted a poll this past spring, asking parents what type of fun sessions they would like to see for their children (for mini-sessions), I was surprised but extremely happy that “Star Wars” was at the top of the list. Being a huge fan of everything Jedi, I knew I exactly what I wanted to do for these sessions. I love the simplicity of childhood and not doing my sessions with a million props. When I realized that these sessions will probably scheduled in the late summer or early fall, I pictured kids on the beach with the golden glow, just hanging out with their favorite Star Wars friend or dressed as a Jedi (or any character) in a field/park. With a lot of mini sessions, I like to add my own little pop of color or “spark”, so the excitement of lighting up and sparking some lightsabers for kids was going to be special. I set up a model shoot with my own little muse, Zackary “Binx”. With a September birthday, it’s always a late summer scramble to come up with a fun birthday photoshoot so why not bring his best friend BB8 down to the beach and let him have fun? This shoot was so much fun. It allowed Binx to be himself, run around with his favorite Star Wars toys and not worry about “posing” or the camera in general. Hand a boy a lightsaber and you’re going to get naturally hilarious and amazing photos. When we were finished Binx turned to me and said, “Mom, this was really cool! I only wish my lightsaber was real and not a toy”. Well, let me tell you, when I called him into the room where I was editing his photos and showed him the final product, I got the biggest hug and he said “oh my gosh I’m a real Jedi!”. He was so excited to see the glow and sparks on the beach and that he and his buddy BB8 were looking for sharks out in the water together. I love being able to capture this age, the imagination of a child, but the most rewarding part of this photography journey is the smile I get to see on his face or any child’s face when they see the final images.

These mini sessions will be available for booking in September and October, on special weeknights. BB8 and a lightsaber will be available and final images will feature the same glow and sparks, in any color of your choosing.
